YMCA Centre for Education and Skill Development

Dr.K.C.Abraham, Chairman
Mr.John Kennedy, Related Secretary

Job oriented skill trainings for the youth is an important programme at the YMCA Centre in Kumbalgodu. Because, a majority of Indian youth do not possess marketable skills, which is an impediment in getting decent employment.  India has a large young population, but according to a report by the Ministry of Labour and employment Government of India, only 5% of the Indian labour force in the age group of 20-24 years has obtained vocational skills through formal means, whereas it is between 60% and 96% in the industrialized countries. The reality in India is about 63% of the school students drop out at different stages before reaching class X.   This signifies that a large number of school dropouts do not have access to quality education and skill development to improve their employability and socio-economic condition.  Most of the training programmes in our country cater to the needs of the organized sector and the un-organised sector is completely ignored.

Therefore the YMCA centre for Education and skill Development at Kumbalgodu is specifically focusing on the subjects Education & Vocational Skills as the two important areas which could bring in a transformation among the unemployed and under employed youth of our state.  Based on this mandate, the following programmes were organised during the year 2010-11

Vocational skill training programmes

With an increase in their widespread use and their ever-increasing popularity, computer education has become an integral part of life and the need of the day. As a large number of garment industries situated around the city, the tailoring training conducted by the YMCA is helping many young women to learn sewing skills for their livelihood. Many of the trainees who have completed this course in our centre are successfully employed. 24 women received skills in tailoring and embroidery during this year and they were certified at a brief function on February 4th 2011.
