The Bangalore City is growing phenomenally in the IT sector and other areas of development.  The issue of preservation of ecology and environment has become more important than ever before as we are ridden with water and air pollution, garbage dump, scarcity of water, vehicular pollution & death of lakes and many more caused due to the process of development and urbanization.  The task group on Ecology and Environment has been effectively dealing with the issue of preservation of ecology and environment particularly in the city of Bangalore.

World Environment Day - 5 June 2008

World Environment Day Theme: Save Water, Plant More Trees, Protect your Environment

The World Environment day was observed on 5 June 2008. This programme was organized at Baldwin Boys' School, Hosur Road, Bangalore. Justice Sri. N. Santosh Hegde, [Judge, Supreme Court of India], Lokayukta, State of Kamataka was the Chief Guest and inaugurated this programme. He released the Eco-poster "Save water, and Plant more trees". He also distributed saplings to all the children at the school. In his inaugural speech, he spoke of how Bangalore was a decade ago, when the city was greener and the pollution levels were very low. He encouraged the children to take steps to protect the environment as they all become the leaders of future generations. He also stressed in regreening Bangalore which is the need of the hour. Dr. Ravi Ralph, Chief Conservator of Forests, released the Eco-badges on the occasion.

Over 500 saplings were arranged to distribute it to all the children. These saplings were arranged from "Aranya Bhavan". The other delegates present for the occasion were — Sri. Ivan Nigh, Ex-M.L.A., Sri.Chikka Aruvaiah, Deputy Director, Department of Horticulture. The YMCA Save Bangalore Movement Chairman, Sri.H.F.S.Knight, Save Bangalore Movement Committee Members Sri .Nikhil Tivari, Sri. Thulasi Ram, Sri.Sanathanan, Sri. Ln. M. P. Naidu, Sri.Muniappa. Our YMCA General Secretary, Sri. S. V. Rathna Kumar, Mr. Bertram Devadas Assoc. Gen. Sec., YMCA-New Delhi were also present on the occasion. Sri. Dinker Wilson, Principal, Baldwin Boys' School proposed Vote of Thanks. The event was coordinated by Mr. Arun Karodi, Asst. Gen. Sec., MCA-Bangalore.

Late Dr. Fr. Cecil Saldanha S J Memorial Inter high school Debate Competition on Environment

This Debate Competition on Environment was organized for the 5th consecutive year on 9th November 2006 at city YMCA Nrupathunga road, Bangalore. Around 40 schools participated in this programme. The Chief Guest, Sri. Jayaprakash, Vice Chairman, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, inaugurated the competition. Ln Gowda K.S.C. District Chairman, for Rain Water Harvesting and Environment safeguard, was the Guest of Honour. Ln.V.V.Krishna Reddy, Dist. Governor, Lions Club of Gokula graced the occasion. The topic of the competition was "Unchecked Growth of Multinational Companies brings more destruction to Bangalore City's Growth and Environment".

Smt. Lydia Samuel, Principal, Baldwin Women's' College, Bangalore, distributed the prizes. Thanks to Lions Club of Bangalore Orchards who sponsored this event.

World Water Day

This mega event was organized by YMCA Bangalore Bourdillon branch in coordination with Lions Club of Bangalore Orchards under the Task Group of Ecology and Environment. This mammoth World Water day rally was conducted in front of Vidhana Soudha on 22nd March 2007 at 9.00 A M. The theme for 2007 was " Save Water for the blue Planet". Sri. B.S. Yediyurappa, Hon'ble Deputy Chief Minister, Government of Karnataka, symbolically unveiled the portrait of the World Water day symbol. The portrait specially designed for the occasion particularly depicted a girl-child crying for water helplessly to save water for future generations to come.

Sri. Cyriac Joseph, Hon'ble Chief Justice, High Court of Karnataka, flagged off the rally. Smt. Shobha Karandlaje, M.L.C. General Secretary, BJP Karnataka, Dr. Shankarshan Basu, Associate Professor, I.I.M. Bangalore, Ln.P.S. Venkatachalam, Vice District Governor, Lion's Club International and Sri.Ne.La.Narendra Babu, M.L.A. Rajajinagar constituency, and Sri. Ashok, Hon'ble Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Government of Karnataka were the Guests of Honour. The Chief Guests and Guests of Honour were honoured with Bouquets, Garlands, Mementoes and shawls. Sri.J. Alexander, I.A.S. [Retd]., President, YMCA Bangalore graced the occasion and Sri S.V. Rathna Kumar, General Secretary, YMCA Bangalore and members of the Task Group of Ecology and Environment were also present. T-shirts, caps, and breakfast were provided to all the participants and school children who were present on the day.
