The City of Bangalore has emerged to be one of the major Metropolitan cities of the world with developments happening in all sectors of life.  With the development the ecology and environment issue beckons major concern in light of de-forestation, pollution and depletion of natural resources. The Task Group on Ecology and Environment continues its struggle to create awareness among children particularly and people at large in the city of Bangalore with an appeal to 'Save Bangalore'.

World Environment Day - 5 June 2008

World Environment Day Theme:Save Water, Plant More Trees, Protect your Environment

The World Environment day was observed on 5th June 2008. The programme was organized at Baldwin Boys' School, Hosur Road, Bangalore. Justice Sri. N. Santosh Hegde, [Former Judge, Supreme Court of India], Lokayuktha, State of Karnataka, was the Chief Guest and inaugurated the programme. He released the Eco-Poster "Save Water, and Plant more Trees". He also distributed saplings to all the children at the school. In his inaugural speech, he spoke of how Bangalore was a decade ago, when the city was greener and the pollution levels were very low. He encouraged the children to take steps to protect the environment as they all become the leaders of future generations. He also stressed in regreeing Bangalore which is the need of the hour.

Dr. Ravi Ralph, Chief Conservator of Forests, released the Eco-Badges on the occasion. Over 500 saplings were arranged to distribute it to all the children. These saplings were arranged from "Aranya Bhavana".

The other delegates present for the occasion were – Sri. Ivan Nigli, Former M.L.A., Sri.Chikka Aruvaiah, Deputy Director, Department of Horticulture. The YMCA Save Bangalore Movement Chairman, Sri. H.F.S. Knight, Save Bangalore Committee Members, Sri. Nikhil Tivari, Sri. Thulasi Ram, Sri. Sanathanan, Sri. Ln. M.P. Naidu, and Sri. Ln. Muniappa. Our YMCA General Secretary, Sri. S.V. Rathna Kumar, was present on the occasion. Sri. Dinker Wilson, Principal, Baldwin Boys' School proposed the vote of thanks.

Workshop Inter-personal Skills

This half-day workshop was organized by YMCA Bourdillon branch on 15th November 2008 at Diamond Hall, Karnataka State Cricket Association, M.G. Road, Bangalore. Around 30 teachers of Baldwin Methodist Kannada school, Anepalya Bangalore, attended this workshop. Prof. T.S. Rajamani, Director, PERTS International, Bangalore, and Mr. Anoop Das, Administrator, Mitralaya Girls High School, conducted sessions on this day. The teachers were greatly benefited from this programme. 

Teachers' day Celebrations

YMCA Save Bangalore Movement along with Lions Club of Bangalore Orchards jointly celebrated Teachers' day on 5th September 2008 under the theme "Guru - The Greenery Protector", at Baldwin Co-Education Ext. High School, Raja Rajeswarinagar [BEML Layout], Bangalore. Capt. Ln. Sri. V.A.K. Ram Mohan, President, Lions Club of Bangalore Orchards was the Chief Guest. Sri. Samson M Goudar, General Manager [Revenue & Appeals], BESCOM Bangalore, planted the saplings in the school premises. Sri. H.F.S. Knight, Chairman, YMCA Save Bangalore Movement presided. Sri. K.T. Thomas, Board Member, YMCA Bangalore, and Prof. T.S. Rajamani, YMCA Save Bangalore Movement Member were present as guests of honour. All the teachers were honoured on the occasion.

Dr. A.N. Yellappa Reddy, Practical Environmentalist, addressed the gathering and spoke on the theme on how a teacher can inspire the students to keep their environment green and clean. All the other Guests planted saplings in the school premises.

Half day Workshop for Sunday School Teachers

YMCA Bourdillon branch arranged a half day workshop for Sunday School Teachers on 10th January 2009 between 10.00 am to 3.30pm. The topic was "Role of Sunday School Teachers in moulding the child spiritually". Around 25 teachers participated in this workshop. The Counsellors for the workshop were – Mr. Anoop Das, Administrator, Mitralaya Girls High School, Mr. B.G. Luke Deputy Gen. Manager, M/s. Tata Consultancy Service, Rev. Mica and Mr. Chandrashekar. Every counselor stressed on importance of understand spirituality in the contemporary social context besides being groomed in the biblical knowledge.

Half day workshop

A half day workshop was organized on 20th February 2009 on the topic – "Drugs and Alcohol" for 10th and 11th standard students at Bishop Cotton Boys' school, Bangalore. Around 200 students participated in the workshop and were benefited. This session was conducted by Prof. T.S. Rajamani, Director, PERTS International, Bangalore.

World Water Day

As March 22nd happens to be World Water day, YMCA Bourdillon branch organized this event in front of Mahatma Gandhi Statue, M.G. Road, Bangalore with Dr. P.S. Rao, Water Resources Management specialist as the Chief Guest for that day. He inaugurated the programme and addressed the high school children and the gathering.

Smt. T.C. Sarala Kumari, Public Relation Officer, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, unveiled the portrait pertaining to four major issues like "Save Water for Tomorrow, Plant more Trees, Stop Pollution and Ease Traffic". Sri. D. Muralidhar, President, Federation of Karnataka Chamber of Commerce & Industry [FKCCI], distributed the leaflets and books to the participants. Leaflets were also distributed to the public and other members. Sri. H.F.S. Knight, Chairman, YMCA Save Bangalore Movement, was present on the occasion and spoke to the media which was very well covered by Press and the Television Media. This World Water day event was published in almost all the Newspapers  in different regional languages along with photographs. Prof. T.S. Rajamani, who has authored the book "Freedom from Pollution – You can make a difference", was also released on the occasion. Sri. Ln. M.P. Naidu, Sri. Ln. Muniappa, Mr. Ponnappa and other Lions Club members were also present on the occasion. Around 200 school children participated. Breakfast and Coffee were served on the occasion.
